Tipping

Cultural Norms

• Public displays of affection, even for heterosexual couples, are generally frowned upon
• During Ramadan, be mindful of those who are fasting and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during fasting hours
• Politeness and hospitality are highly valued
• Always greet people, especially elders, with respect

LGBTQ+ Information

Exercise caution. Homosexuality is technically illegal in Lebanon under Article 534 of the penal code, though enforcement can vary. Public display of affection for same-sex couples is not advised. Social acceptance is limited, especially outside of progressive circles in Beirut.

Alcohol & Drug Laws

• The legal drinking age is 18
• Drug laws are strict, and possession of even small amounts of illegal drugs can lead to severe penalties
• Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal and strictly enforced

Special Laws

• Be aware of local protests and demonstrations which can occur without warning, especially in Beirut
• Avoid crowded areas where political gatherings are taking place
• Photography of military installations or government buildings is prohibited
• Respect local customs and traditions, particularly in religious areas
