Tipping

• Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated for good service
• Restaurants: 10
• 15% is common if service charge is not included
• Taxis: Round up the fare
• Hotel staff: Small tips for porters and housekeepers are appreciated

Money & Payments

• ATMs are widely available, especially in urban areas
• Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels, larger shops, and restaurants, but cash is preferred for smaller purchases and souqs
• It is advisable to carry some cash, especially outside major cities
• There is no black market for cash

Cultural Norms

• Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites
• Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during the fasting hours of Ramadan
• Remove shoes before entering mosques and private homes
• Use your right hand when shaking hands, passing objects, or eating, as the left hand is considered unclean
• Avoid pointing with your finger; instead, use your whole hand or a gentle nod
• Do not cross your legs with the sole of your foot pointing at someone, as it is considered rude

LGBTQ+ Information

Exercise caution. Homosexuality is illegal in Oman and punishable by law. Public displays of affection are also not tolerated.

Alcohol & Drug Laws

• The legal drinking age is 21
• Alcohol consumption is restricted to licensed hotels, resorts, and private residences
• Public intoxication is illegal
• Drug laws are extremely strict, including for possession of even small amounts, and carry severe penalties including long prison sentences and large fines

Special Laws

• Respectful dress is required, especially in public and religious sites
• Women should cover their shoulders and knees
• Men should avoid wearing shorts in public
• Public displays of affection are not culturally acceptable
• Photography of people, especially women, should only be done with permission
